READING MATTERS. Literacy can help play a life-saving role in a young person’s development! You can help! Support Words Alive in our mission to open opportunities to life success by inspiring a commitment to reading.
Annually Words Alive provides intervention programming to over 5,500 children and families in San Diego with the support of over 500 volunteers.
The Author’s Luncheon and Auction supports our impact in the community raising over $250,000. This year we will sell‐out again with over 600+ attendees!
We ask for your help in making this year’s event a success by contributing an item(s) for our Author’s Luncheon raffle or silent auction. In recognition of your donation, your business name will be featured on our website, through social media, and in a day‐of‐event presentation.
Words Alive was established in 1999, founded on the belief that if you value reading and understand its fundamental connection to all aspects of your life, then you will be better equipped to thrive as a lifelong learner and productive member of the community.
Illiteracy and low literacy lead to poor life outcomes including higher rates of incarceration, homelessness, dependence on public assistance, and poor health. Through our core programs, training, and community collaboration, Words Alive is working to not only increase reading skills and confidence in our participants but to foster a life-long love of reading and learning.
Words Alive serves students and families in underserved communities where there is a gap in access to educational programs. In low income communities, there is one age appropriate book for every three hundred children compared to thirteen books for every child in middle income communities. Words Alive ensures that the children we serve have access to books in the home through our book giveaways each year with over 22,000 books donated annually. In addition to getting books in the hands of the children and families who need them most, Words Alive volunteers spend an average of 40 hours in each classroom we serve to fulfill our mission.
